Playing Dress Up: Catherine Malandrino x Kohl's

Fashion Designer Catherine Malandrino debuted her French inspired collection for Design Nation at Kohl's last Friday.

I went to check out what my local store had in stock for the launch and also to review a few of the pieces for you.

I arrived after 10:30am and it appeared that little to nothing had been touched from the collab. It was definitely overpriced for the Kohl's customer so I'm not surprised. I'm not sure why they priced it the way they did, I know they have sales on launch day but even with the sale markdowns it was still too pricey for what it was.

Not that there wasn't cute things, but many of them for that quality I can find at F21.
Just my two cents.

I wish they would've carried the laser cut pieces at my area, since I was interested in shopping those, but they did not. I heard from a few other shoppers that their stores also did not carry those pieces.

Two of Four dresses showcased at my local Kohl's.

Tops & Pants. Everything in black.

I was drawn to the jumpers because of my sweater addiction and the faux leather jacket.

I was interested in that striped sweater in blue, but they only had the cream/black.
Also people were suggesting it was a bit R2D2-ish. Not exactly the look I'm going for.

 MORE BLACK.

Cute blouse but poor quality comparable to F21.
I love F21 but this would be like what? $14 at F21.
BTW, 3.1 Phillip Lim x Target blouse/top quality was WAAAY better.

Playing Dress Up:

For Reference: everything is size XS, I am 5'3, and short-waisted.

 Faux Leather Moto Jacket
$120 on sale for $90.
I was not impressed at this price.
I tried on a faux leather jacket like this at Target last week for $34.99.
Good fit though, also short-waisted, long torso's beware.

$68 on sale for $51.
Comfy jumper, perfect for leggings but still all I can think is R2D2 now...

Scroll Jacquard Sweater
$68 on sale for $51.
Super soft sweater. Reminds me of a throw blanket...
The front white design is uber cooshy. The sleeves are a stretchy ribbed knit sweater material.

Paris Je T'aime Shirt in wine
$36 on sale for $27.

I tucked the shirt in the front, it's pretty boxy.
Not really sure about this shirt. It feels more like lounge wear.
Nice touch with the details on the back of the shirt.

$98  on sale for $73.50 (oh hail no!)
Boxy and gives me a tummy pouf. The swirl cutouts were nice and it was lined inside so that's a plus.
But that price? What? Why?

$58 on sale for $43.50.

The Leaning Tower of Eiffel???
It is cute though, dolman sleeved and an extra plus it's a wool blend.

 Textured Knit Skirt
$50 on sale for $37.50.

A cute well made skirt that goes with a lot of the Malandrino pieces. Features a stretchy waistband. The material reminds me of the sweater knit dresses from Missoni for Target.

Here's the Eiffel Sweater with the skirt.

Paris Sweater
$58 on sale for $43.50
Here's the skirt again paired with the longer sleeved Paris jumper.

Embroidered Shift Dress Set
$120 on sale for $90.
SO pricey. The dress does look very sophisticated and polished.
Comes with the nude slip underneath and very delicate embroidering.

What did you feel about the Kohl's collab with Maladrino?

The collection is online and in-stores right now and on sale as reflected on this post.
Extra 15 % off with code: LEAVES until Oct 5.
Kohls Card holders get either 15%, 20% of 30% off until Oct 5.

Makeup Bag Haul!

My trusty Nordstrom salmon colored makeup bag was growing a little weary on me. I had it for around 4 years already and I scored it for free at Nordstrom's Beauty Trend Show at Westfield Valley Fair.
Tormented old thing. Le sigh.
Speaking of Nordstrom Beauty Trend Show, I went to one this past Saturday with Blogger Nancy Lee of Fashionchicsta & Westfield Style Tastemaker Hasti Kashfia. We got a ton of samples in our cute Nordstrom tote featuring beauty brand names all over it, graffiti style. And after all the beauty tips & trends, I'm in dire need of more space in my makeup bag to contain all my happy purchases.
Nordstrom Beauty Trend Show Fall'13.  Wearing: H&M felt baseball cap, F21 necklace, F21 Cardigan (scored at Crossroads Trading Co.), Nordys Rack Tee, 3.1 Phillip Lim x Target mini satchel.
Back to the makeup bag issue.
It had a good run, but with my makeup overflowing out the bag and popping up in unexpected places in my house (i.e. soap dish, jewelry cabinet.) it was time to get organized and be able to find all my makeup in one spot for once in my life. LOL.

Out with the old. In with the new.

The Haul

Here's some great replacement options if you are in the market for one right now.
I went all out and picked up 3 organizers from Target, Sephora and The Limited.

1. Sephora + Pantone Universe: Borealis Beauty Clutch $19.99

This Limited Edition Holographic "Beauty Clutch" can be used as a clutch or as a makeup bag and also great for traveling, (the last two is what I will be using it for). I love the holographic pink and green reflective shades. Earlier this year it was $39.99, it's now on sale!
This beaut only cost me $19.99
Find it here or in-store: Holographic Dobbie
 They are selling out quick...

*Bay area locals: I picked up this one up at the Westfield Valley Fair
Sephora location. There's now one left in stock.

2. SOHO Beauty Case in Snake Skin Print at Target $29.99

This train case is awesome. I don't know what took me so long to upgrade. I can now organize and view my make up. I keep everything that isn't in normal rotation in this case, everyday makeup in my Sephora/Pantone bag. I sectioned off my blushes, eyeliners and lipsticks...I was totes feeling like Oprah (in Oprah's voice) You get a home, you get a home and you get a home!!!

The snake print is in-store only.
Shop Target online for similar items: Soho Beauty Cases

3. The Limited mini glitter travel case $9.99

I scored this glistening little one at The Limited, I wasn't looking for it,
but since it was "shop for an organizer type of day" y'know why not?
I like the idea I can safely store a bottle of nail polish in here for a quick trip and costume jewelry without snagging my clothes in my luggage.

Check in-stores for this one ladies. It's only 9.99!

Ipsy Glam Bag: Sep 2013

It's true, I FINALLY gave in to the beauty mail subscription world. You know what grabbed my attention? When I saw a preview that butter London would be in some of the IPSY bags.
That and fellow fashion blogger Tracy's Notebook of Style reviews were very convincing!

I received my first Ipsy Glam Bag this month just in time for the
September theme: "Classic Beauty."
I was beyond excitement when the hot pink mail envelope arrived.
I opened it to reveal a cute little blue and lace pattern makeup bag.

While at first I was underwhelmed with the things I saw, after trying some of them on it was absolutely worth my purchase of $10 (about a $50 value) a month for this beauty bag subscription of 4-5 products. Also,  let's be honest, a little bummed I didn't get the butter London polish!

Here's what I got:

All the bags came with an "em michelle phan"
Career Life the life palette sampler.
I got "Natural Talent."
Thanks Michelle!

1. Skyn ICELAND: Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels.
Valued at $30 for 8 pairs. Ipsy subscribers get 20% off!

I'm looking forward to de-stressing and watching Real Housewives of Miami with these under my eyes! Maybe I'll get the husband involved too!

2. Starlooks: Obsidian Kohl Eye Pencil.
Valued at $12. Ipsy subscribers get 20% off purchase of $35.
This I tried, you will see swatches and pic below. I was surprised at how soft the pencil was. Usually for something practically free I was expecting poor quality and pulling. But this glided on very smooth and would be great at blending with a brush.
 Rich Pigment too!

 3. NYX Single Eyeshadow: Golden Poppy.
Valued at $4.50. Ipsy subscribers get 30% off eyeshadow bases.

I've used NYX cosmetics before. You can pick them up at Nordstrom Rack for cheap. They are very powdery but have a lot of color. Unfortunately this lighter gold tone doesn't really pop on my skin. It's pretty subtle on my eyes, but is fine for a quick makeup application & hint of color for running errands.

4. Elizabet Mott: It's So Big Volumizing Mascara
Valued at $19.99. Ipsy subscribers get 50% off any purchase!

I like the hourglass shape of the brush. Gives a good even coat. I noticed a little more depth, volume and definition. But the mascara was kind of wet, I could feel it on my eyelashes.

5. Pop Beauty: Pouty Pop Crayon in Fuchsia Flirt.
Valued at $25 for 6 Crayons. Ipsy subscribers get 20%.

I was pretty stoked to get this one. I previously saw it on other bloggers Ipsy August post, so I was surprised to see it again! I got the color I wanted too. ;)
I like this, sure it's kind of childlike but it's cute!
And my husband liked the color on me, so extra points for him noticing me wear a brand new product.

Here I am wearing the Starlooks Kohl Eye Pencil in Obsidian, It's So Big mascara & Pop Beauty Fuchsia Pouty Pop Crayon. Not the clearest of pics but you get the idea! The crayon is surprisingly not that fuchsia on me. And the eyeliner and mascara gave a little definition to my eyes.
